Aged Care Employee Day is an annual celebration on August 7 to recognise the 456,000 aged care workers who support older Australians.
Three-quarters of Carinity’s cherished team members work in our aged care and home care services. We asked some of them what motivates them to support older Queenslanders.
Jennifer Johnson worked as a primary school teacher and principal for 33 years. She now supports Hervey Bay seniors as a Lifestyle Carer for Carinity Home Care.
“I chose to work in seniors care as I believed it would give me a deep sense of purpose and provide me with the opportunity to make meaningful connections with valued people in my community,” Jennifer said.
“What I enjoy most about caring for seniors is that every day and each person is unique and they have something different to share. If I can leave each client feeling cared for, happy and valued, then I have done my job.”
Peggy Wilson has worked across the aged care sector for 12 years and enjoys “making a genuine difference” in the lives of seniors supported by Carinity Home Care Hervey Bay.
“I find it incredibly rewarding to support the older generation in maintaining their independence, dignity and quality of life while assisting them to achieve their personal goals,” Peggy said.
“Knowing that even the smallest acts of kindness, encouragement and compassionate care can make a difference to someone’s everyday life is what I enjoy the most.”
Olivia Becher is an Activities Officer who supports seniors living in the Carinity Clifford House aged care home in Brisbane.
She was inspired to work in aged care because she has “always felt a strong connection with looking after people and trying to brighten people’s days.”
“My biggest motivation is supporting the residents. I enjoy their stories and caring for them; they have a lot of wisdom, life experience and fascinating histories,” Olivia explains.
“Seeing them smile, laugh and have a good time fills me with joy. It makes me want to do everything I can to make sure they stay happy and keep loving life.”
Between them, Kepy Reeves and Michelle Evans have been working in the aged care industry for 50 years. They support Bundaberg seniors through their Lifestyle Carer roles with Carinity Home Care.
Both were inspired to care for seniors after having close connections with their respective grandmothers who they lived with – and were positive influences on them growing up.
“I have always got along with the elderly and shown them empathy, compassion and respect. My grandmother taught me that everyone deserves to be loved, wanted and cared for – no matter what age or race,” Michelle said.
Rakesh Prasad previously worked as a lab technician, timber and hardware company supervisor, hotel security, and video games arcade manager, but he “always had a desire to help and work for seniors”.
“My inspiration came from caring for my own parents and helping and caring for their friends who were elderly people,” said Rakesh, who has worked at Carinity Colthup Manor aged care in Ipswich for 23 years.
“What motivates me to help others in my role is a bond that you build over years looking after residents every day and caring for them. They sort of become your family away from home.
“What I enjoy the most caring for seniors is the love, affection, and appreciation you gain through looking after them on a daily basis. It truly is very inspirational for me.”
Crissy Holman has worked in the aged care industry for 11 years. She currently supports Sunshine Coast seniors “to remain living safely at home” through her role with Carinity Home Care.
Before commencing her career in aged care, Crissy owned a cleaning business and was a NDIS support worker.
“While working in disability support as a cleaner, I witnessed situations where people were not receiving the level of care and support they deserved,” Crissy said.
“This inspired me to complete my studies and move into the aged care industry, so I could make a positive difference in people’s lives and help ensure they receive quality care.
“I am passionate about supporting people to maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life for as long as possible. I love knowing that I have helped make a difference in an older person’s life.”
