Homicide Squad detectives have released CCTV as part of an appeal for information into a fatal shooting in Sydney’s southwest last year.
About 2am on Thursday 27 July 2023, emergency services were called to Broughton Street in Canterbury, after reports of a shooting.
On arrival, officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command found a man with gunshots wounds. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, died at the scene.
The man has since been identified as 28-year-old Ferenc ‘David’ Stemler.
Local police, with assistance from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, commenced inquiries before the matter was taken carriage of by Task Force Magnus under Strike Force Murrell.
To date, a man and woman have been charged and remain before the courts.
As inquiries continue, detective have released CCTV of the incident as a part of an appeal for information.
The CCTV shows a white Lexus – stolen in July last year – arriving at the Casula Central carpark about 10.25pm on Tuesday 18 July 2023 to lay in wait for the planned shooting.
The Lexus is seen being ‘checked on’ by a black hatchback and dark-coloured hatchback on Thursday 20 July 2023 and again on Monday 24 July 2023. The Lexus’ lights are seen flashing as the keys appeared to be tested.
Just before 9.50pm on Wednesday 26 July 2023, a white Commodore – believed to be stolen in April 2016 – enters the carpark from Pine Road, before leaving in convoy with the white Lexus.
Both cars travel to the carpark of a townhouse a short distance away on Pine Road, where they wait for approximately three hours.
At 1.04am on Thursday 27 July 2023, the cars are seen exiting the M5 Motorway at Bexley Road in Kingsgrove.
CCTV then captures the moment Mr Stemler approaches the Commodore outside his address on Broughton Street in Canterbury before he is fatally shot. Detectives believe the meeting was arranged.
After the fatal attack, the white Lexus and a dark hatchback are seen in convoy in Casula on their way to burn out the Lexus used in the shooting.
Detectives are appealing for anyone with information about the movements of the cars or shooting incident to contact police.
