Challenge getting state’s officers ‘pushing’ for mental health awareness

Twenty-one days, 3,046 push-ups and over 300 Queensland Police Service (QPS) members participating from across the state.

That puts a cap on the defined numbers, however the meaning behind the physical effort QPS members went to throughout this challenge is not so easily quantified.

From dealing with their own challenges to helping individuals and families come to terms with theirs, the aim of the ‘Push-Up Challenge’ rings true to them.

The 3,046 push-ups represent the number of lives lost to suicide in 2018 and is the number of push-ups participants aimed to do within the challenge timeframe, either themselves or as part of a team.

From Kowanyama to Rathdowney and Southport, our QPS members formed teams to take on the challenge all throughout the state.

The challenge encourages everyone to leverage physical wellbeing to support their mental wellbeing and being part of our emergency services responding to situations throughout their careers, our officers and staff members know all too well, just how important mental health is.

Whilst the officers and staff members are all coming together for this common cause, they are also banding together for each other – for those whose loved ones have suffered mental ill-health and felt the effects of them having paid the ultimate price.

To-date, the 325 officers have collectively done more than 360,000 push-ups and raised over $12,000.

The money raised on behalf of all Push-Up Challenge participants is going to ‘headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation’.

QPS members weren’t the only ones participating, community members from all around the state got involved as part of the united effort

Today, on the end-date of the challenge, we recognise the efforts of all our participating officers and staff members for this great cause.
