Regional Victorians will get greater train capacity under the Liberals and Nationals’ plan to deliver more trains and more seats across Victoria.
Introducing new hybrid electric trains on the Melton and Wyndham Vale lines will free up 25 three car set V/Line trains to be deployed across the regional network, delivering more seats for regional passengers.
This will boost capacity across the regional network, helping to reduce crowding and keep regional communities better connected.
It is part of our plan to deliver more trains and more seats for passengers across Victoria.
Leader of the Opposition, Jess Wilson, said: “This is about making sure all Victorians benefit from our plan to transform train services across Victoria.
“Our plan will deliver more capacity across regional Victoria, making it easier for people to get to work, access education and healthcare, and stay connected with family and friends.
“Whether you live in Melbourne or regional Victoria, you deserve a public transport system that keeps pace with your community and gets you where you need to go.”
“That means more trains available for regional services, giving communities across Victoria better connections and more reliable public transport.”
Shadow Minister for Public Transport, Matthew Guy, said: “Regional Victorians should not have to miss out on better train services because Labor has failed to properly plan for a growing state.
“Our plan will boost capacity across the regional network, giving regional communities better access to reliable public transport.
“This is a smart investment across the entire train network, delivering more trains, and more seats for passengers in Melbourne’s west and across regional Victoria.”
Under the Liberals and Nationals plan:
- Gippsland: Five additional V’Locity sets (providing 1,110 seats overall) will be allocated to Traralgon and Bairnsdale to run longer trains with more seats in busier periods. All additional sets will be used multiple times every day.
- North East Victoria: Five additional V’Locity sets (providing 1,110 seats overall) will be allocated to Seymour and Albury to run longer trains with more seats in busier periods.
- Northern Victoria: Five additional V’Locity sets (providing 1,110 seats overall) will be allocated to Echuca and Bendigo to run longer trains with more seats in busier periods.
- Western Victoria: Four additional V’Locity sets (providing 888 seats overall) will be allocated to Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough to run longer trains with more seats in busier periods.
- South West Victoria: Five additional V’Locity sets (providing 1,110 seats overall) will be allocated to Warrnambool and Geelong, to run longer trains with more seats in busier periods.
- Network reserve: One V’Locity set will be retained as a network reserve to deploy as required across the network.
