Change of pace

Department of Defence

After 35 years of full-time service, Major Robert Nelson was ready for a change of pace.

He found flexibility in his new part-time Army role that allows him to serve in a way that suits his lifestyle.

He is able to support his unit where and when needed, but has time to relax or be productive at home – depending on the week.

“Every now and then I find myself sitting on the couch watching Netflix and thinking ‘you know, I shouldn’t be doing this’,” Major Nelson said.

“But after 40-odd years in the military, I probably deserve a little bit of me time.”

For the past three years, he’s been working as a unit security officer with Career Management Army on a service category (SERCAT) 3 basis, which has allowed him the freedom to pursue new opportunities while contributing to Army.

“I like to feel that I’m contributing but also giving something back,” Major Nelson said.

In his new role, he serves two days a week and helps members in his unit with tasks ranging from security clearances to overseas travel briefings.

“I know that by doing this I’m taking the pressure off full-time members who are already under enough stress and don’t need to worry about extra regimental appointments or roles,” Major Nelson said.

Units are able to appoint SERCAT 3 members to take on extra regimental duties, allowing full-time members to focus on their primary role and not split responsibilities across different roles.

Major Nelson recommends people find flexible roles as a unit security officer or other extra regimental appointments, regardless of their military background.

“Pretty much anyone can do it,” he said.

“For people who are considering SERCAT 3 work, it’s a great opportunity to do one specific task and fit it in two or three days a week without overstressing yourself.”
