Christmas is coming early to Chinchilla, with a special community event planned to celebrate the completion of the $8.4 million revitalisation of the Chinchilla Cultural Precinct.
Residents are invited to come along to the official opening celebration, which kicks off at 2pm on Saturday 9 December at the central lawn area on Heeney Street.
Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said it was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the revitalised precinct, which serves as Chinchilla’s thriving cultural hub for community gatherings, events, exhibitions, and entertainment.
“The time has nearly come to drop the veil on this fantastic facility, and we’re excited to showcase the space to the community, which has been waiting patiently for construction to be completed,” Cr McVeigh said.
“To mark this exciting occasion, the revitalised precinct will come alive with a variety of activities and entertainment on offer for the whole family.
“The event kicks off at 2pm with an official opening ceremony and ribbon cut, followed by free sweet treats for the community.
“Chinchilla Library is hosting a special Christmas story time from 2:30pm, followed by robotic and interactive workshops for all ages.
“Lapunyah Art Gallery will showcase its fabulous new facility with ‘The Regeneration Exhibition’ featuring the works of 19 local artists across several artistic forms.
“Chinchilla Cinema will showcase two special screenings with a discounted ticket price of $2 – screening the 80s classic ‘Back to the Future’ at 4:00pm, and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ at 7pm, which was directed by Chinchilla-born filmmaker George Miller.”
Cr McVeigh said the celebrations wouldn’t stop there, with the Chinchilla Community Christmas Celebration kicking off at the Botanic Parkland from 4pm.
“it’s a day of festive celebration for Chinchilla, and I encourage everyone to come along to explore the new Precinct, before heading over to the Botanic Parkland for the community’s premier Christmas celebration,” he said.
