Chirnside Urban Park Ready for Lift-Off

Yarra Ranges Shire Council

The new Chirnside Urban Park is underway with ground officially broken on the flagship project.

The park is a key component of the Chirnside Park Master Plan and was informed by extensive community feedback. The park will provide a vital green space for our Chirnside Park residents.

“This space will be the green centre of Chirnside Park. A place for friends and family to connect, to step away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some nature right on their doorstep,” said Chirnside Ward Councillor Richard Higgins.

“It’s one of the only green spaces in Chirnside Park, so we were determined to listen to community and get it right. That included Council purchasing additional adjoining land so we could incorporate more of the community’s wishes.”

“I’m proud of the ambitious plan that’s resulted, and I am thrilled to see the diggers in the ground, and the park coming to life,” Cr Higgins said.

The final round of community engagement on the draft master plan was concluded in May 2022.

“This park will be an asset for the community long into the future. Something we heard repeatedly when talking to the community about this project was that it had to be an accessible space for all ages.”

Some of the plans for the new park include enhancing the existing wetlands, creating an open lawn area, shelters with BBQs and plenty of seating.

“One of the things we are most excited about is incorporating the theme of ‘flight’ in response to community feedback; This will be reflected in the urban forest, discovery trails and scooter paths and of course, in the multi-level playground.”

“I hope we see young children play here, that will come back with their own kids in the future.”

Local father Sam Downie said having the park right in their neighbourhood was a huge advantage.

“It’s going to be great to have a big grassy area for the kids to play on, and an awesome playground right here. It’s so close to all the shops and will be a great place to go for some family fun.”

“My little boy is watching the park being built from his bedroom. I can tell we are going to spend a lot of time here!” said Mr Downie.

Mr Downie’s son, two-year-old Xavier, said “Diggers!”

Chirnside Park Urban Park is a partner funded project between the Victorian State Government and Yarra Ranges Council.
