Free Wi-Fi has been rolled out across Darwin CBD as part of City of Darwin’s Smart Darwin strategy and visitors to the city are encouraged to use the service.
Wi-Fi will be provided through the Telstra Air network, with individual users being able to access free Wi-Fi for up to 30 minutes per session, with unlimited data.
Acting Lord Mayor Lambrinidis said “Free Wi-Fi supports City of Darwin’s focus on becoming a smart and prosperous city. Users will now be able to connect to the information they want, when they want, where they want and how they want.”
It is expected that users of the service will be office and city based workers, visitors and international tourists, students and event attendees.
“By providing this service we will be meeting the expectations of everyone who comes into our city. Free Wi-Fi will help to activate our city and public spaces and support local businesses,” said Acting Lord Mayor Lambrinidis.
The free Wi-Fi will be available in 38 key areas across the city, including the Esplanade and Bicentennial Park, Civic Park and Mitchell Street, The Mall, Cavenagh and Smith Streets.
Users will be able to quickly and easily download information and apps they need to travel around the city, view art or do a fitness session – using the Neuron e-scooter app, Bruce Munro Tropical Light app; and Kompan fitness app to use Play Space equipment on the Esplanade.
With a recent trial revealing peak hours of Wi-Fi use occurring during meal times – 12noon-2pm and 6pm-8pm – the local food and beverage industry is also expected to benefit from this initiative, with people often eating and drinking whilst using Wi-Fi.
Decals will be located at the Wi-Fi hotspots to promote the free service and business owners are also encouraged to display the decal.
The new free Wi-Fi compliments City of Darwin’s existing Wi-Fi, available in Libraries, pools and regional parks.
