The newly elected City of Perth Council has supported the trial of two Safe Night Spaces.
At their first Ordinary Council Meeting, Council approved an investment of $575,000 to refit 160 Hay Street, East Perth as a Safe Night Space for women.
A Safe Night Space is a place where people can rest, access basic facilities, seek support and connect to services in a safe and secure environment.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said the City was committed to supporting and advocating to end homelessness.
“The Safe Night Space is a significant step towards an interim solution that helps the most vulnerable people in our community,” Mr Zempilas said.
“As part of this investment, the City will refit 160 Hay Street. We will now be seeking State Government funding so we can appoint an appropriate provider to manage the space.
“For people experiencing homelessness, and also residents and businesses, urgent action is needed.
“The City will continue to work with the homelessness services sector and State Government to end homelessness. We are pleased to take the first step to address the immediate need and look forward to supporting the State Government further.”
During the Council Meeting, elected members also supported the City Administration to continue its work in the development of a Safe Night Space for all genders. Continued action will be discussed in future Council Meetings.
