Cleaner, Cheaper Lithium Refining With Novalith

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Novalith Technologies has found a new way to refine lithium. Instead of using harsh chemicals, their process uses carbon dioxide. This cuts emissions by up to 75%, reduces water use by up to 70%, reduces costs by up to 50% and avoids dangerous waste. It is safer and more sustainable.

Circular thinking

Novalith’s process captures and uses carbon dioxide as a key ingredient. It avoids toxic waste and keeps materials in use. This supports cleaner production and smarter use of resources. Both are important goals in Australia’s Circular Economy Framework.

Ready for real-world use

Novalith’s system can be used in new and existing lithium sites. It helps meet the growing need for battery-grade lithium with less harm to the environment. Their pilot plant has shown the technology works on a largescale. They are now working with global partners. They are now developing commercial lithium refineries to create a sustainable global lithium supply chain.

Recognised for innovation

Novalith was named a winner in the Australian Technologies Competition 2025. The competition was sponsored by us. This shows its role in creating low-impact solutions for clean energy and circular innovation.
