During May 2026, 85 practices across WA set up waiting room displays for the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) as part of a competition run collaboratively by Cancer Council WA, WA Health, and WA Primary Health Alliance.
Thirty-eight (45%) of the participating practices were located in regional WA, with every region across the state represented. The South West had the highest number of entries with 14 practices taking part.
The competition
Practices were invited to order a free resource pack and use it to set up a display to help patients understand the importance of lung cancer screening. Practices then sent in photos of their displays to go in the draw to win a prize.
The standard of the entries was so high that we decided we needed to add two runner-up prizes. The decision was just too tough!
We congratulate our joint runners-up. Geographe Bay General Practice in Busselton, who hosted their display on the front of their reception desk and even included a kids’ activity, with a strong call to action and Dalwallinu Medical Centre whose display featured a handmade lung crafted from arts and crafts materials as its centrepiece and a strong highlight of lung screening eligibility criteria. Both displays reflected real effort, creativity, and understanding of the program.
And the winner…
John Parry Medical Centre in Narrogin took out the major prize.
Their display was creative and colourful, tying into the NLCSP’s national “It’s Good to Know” campaign and Lung Health Awareness Month. It showed a clear understanding that it takes a village to make the program a success – highlighting the role all health professionals play in supporting early detection, a strong call to action, and additional resources drawn from Shine a Light and Lung Foundation Australia.
