It’s Scams Awareness Week, and we’re marking the occasion by announcing our partnership with Macquarie University and the launch of Project RADAR.
Transurban’s ability to disrupt scams and protect our customers is crucial. The RADAR (Robust Attribution & Detection of Adversarial Roadside-scams) system was developed alongside scam detection experts from Macquarie University’s Cyber Security Hub and uses machine learning research to detect and take down malicious SMS scams.
Launched in May of this year, the custom-built AI model is specifically trained to neutralise SMS scams targeting Australians in minutes by transforming them from potential targets into defenders.
If you spot a suspicious text, take a screenshot and upload it to the Linkt website – Project RADAR will instantly scan and analyse the image, flag the threat, cross-check it against global threat intelligence that instructs domain hosts disable the fraudulent website.
The time it takes from an initial scam report to website removal has been more than halved to 4.42 days on average, and 4,731 reported SMS scams have been handled since May this year.

This year’s Scams Awareness Week is focused on the people and families behind scams, and encouraging all Australians to stop, check and protect. Each contribution to the RADAR system makes the system safer and helps protect more Australians.
