Closure of Operation Sombrero at Hervey Bay

Officers from the Wide Bay Tactical Crime Squad and Maryborough Highway Patrol have concluded Operation Sombrero, a traffic operation targeting hooning and other traffic offences.

Throughout the operation, ten people were charged with a total of 82 charges and 9 traffic infringements for numerous offences, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving, fail to wear seatbelt, travel with limb outside vehicle, attach plate belonging to another vehicle, driver drive with unrestrained passenger.

Seven vehicles were also subject to either impoundment or immobilisation, with four vehicles being seized by Police for 90 days and one vehicle seized for forfeiture.

Maryborough Patrol Group Inspector Paul Algie attributed the operation’s success to the Queensland Police Services’ zero-tolerance approach towards this dangerous driving behaviour.

“I would also particularly like to highlight the exemplary work those officers who have driven the success of this operation showing great tenacity of purpose,” Inspector Algie said.

“While the targeted operation is now closed, officers will continue to generate pressure on offenders moving forward.”

A 25-year-old Urraween man has been charged with fourteen counts of wilfully create unnecessary noise/smoke, thirteen counts of unregistered motor vehicle, thirteen counts of uninsured motor vehicle, ten counts of driver use mobile phone, nine counts of unlicenced driving, three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of travel with limbs outside of vehicle, one count each of attach cancelled plate, attach plate belonging to another vehicle.

He will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on September 14.

A 18-year-old Craignish man was issued a traffic infringement notice for wilfully make unnecessary noise/smoke.

A 20-year-old Kawungan man was issued with traffic infringement notices for wilfully make noise/smoke, drive with unrestrained passenger, drive motor vehicle while passenger has part of body outside vehicle.

A 19-year-old Scarness man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, disqualified driving, and was issued with traffic infringement notices for fail to wear seatbelt, fail to attach number plates.

He will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on September 14.

A 19-year-old Urraween woman was issued with two traffic infringement notices for passenger fail to wear seatbelt.

A 20-year-old Kawungan woman has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

She will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on August 31.

A 30-year-old Kawungan man has been charged with three counts of wilfully create unnecessary noise/smoke and one of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on September 14.

A 22-year-old Scarness man has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle and was issued a traffic infringement notice for wilfully create unnecessary noise/smoke.

He will appear in Hervey Magistrates Court on September 9.

A 20-year-old Maryborough man has been charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He will appear in Maryborough Magistrates Court on September 14.

A 25-year-old Burrum Heads man has been charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He will appear in Maryborough Magistrates Court on September 14.
