Coastal change restoration works will start next Monday (5 February) at Cungulla following Ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily impacting the region.
The work is part of Townsville City Council’s recovery effort after the natural weather event.
Heavy machinery will reprofile the sand at the location after it experienced erosion from the cyclone.
Townsville Local Disaster Management Group chair Jenny Hill said the restoration works were happening as quickly as possible ahead of next week’s expected high tides.
“Our region is set to experience tides of more than 4m which could have a huge impact on the shoreline at Cungulla,” Cr Hill said.
“An external coastal engineer has been consulted to help with delivering of the project to reduce the impact from the high tides.
“The works will mean a partial closure of the beach foreshore, operation of machinery, and noise, dust, vibration and flashing lights.
“It is anticipated the works will reduce the impact of erosion and make the beaches more resilient to future weather events.
“I want to thank the community for their patience and cooperation while these important recovery works are being carried out.”
The coastal restoration works are set to finish within two weeks.
