Better sightlines, ease of access and the capacity to host bigger events will benefit the Cobden community when work is finished at the Civic Hall.
Council’s works and services team is in the process of creating openings between the main hall and supper room at the hall.
Mayor Neil Trotter said the $30,000 project had been identified by the Committee in 2015.
“The committee does a great job in running what is a really valuable community asset,” Cr Trotter said.
“They had this vision to make the hall more versatile and expand the possibilities of what can be accommodated there.
“Council allocated $20,000 in the 2018-2019 budget and the committee is contributing $10,000.
“The hall has been a vital part the Cobden district—during both celebrations and emergencies—since it was opened in the 1960s.
“These improvements will ensure it continues to bring the community together for social events, meetings and information sessions well into the future.”
The building is a primarily steel stricture with brick infills so no major reinforcement will be required.
Steel lintels will be installed to support brickwork above the new openings.
Brick walls will be removed from between the columns and door jamb linings and architraves installed around the openings.
Some floor work will be needed to join the two adjoining floors, and concertina doors or roller shutters will be installed so the space can be adjusted for the needs of specific events.
Work is expected to be complete by the end of May.
