CommBank Socceroos to face five-time World Champions Brazil

The CommBank Socceroos have secured landmark home international fixtures in September against five-time FIFA World Cup™ winners Brazil, thanks to the support of the Queensland Government and Tourism and Events Queensland.

Tony Popovic’s side will take on Brazil in two matches: at Queensland Country Bank Stadium, Townsville (Friday, 25 September) and Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane (Tuesday, 29 September).

The CommBank Socceroos are preparing for their round of 32 match against Egypt on 3 July in Dallas, Texas at the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, while Brazil, led by Carlo Ancelotti, are due to play Japan on Tuesday 30 June in Houston Texas.

The September matches will add another chapter to one of the most challenging and intriguing match-ups in Australian football history, as the Socceroos take on one of football’s most decorated nations.

The two teams have met 11 times since their first encounter in 1988, including nine ‘A’ internationals. Brazil has traditionally proven a formidable opponent, with the CommBank Socceroos recording one win and two draws across all matches.

Australia’s win came in 2001 in the FIFA Confederations Cup third-place play-off, when the Socceroos defeated the eventual 2002 World Cup winners 1-0 in Ulsan.

The sides have also met on the world’s biggest stages, including the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, where the CommBank Socceroos held Brazil scoreless at half-time before falling to a hard-fought 2-0 defeat. They also clashed at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, when both teams fielded full-strength national squads prior to the introduction of age restrictions.

More recently, Australia faced Brazil in Melbourne in 2017. Five members of the current national squad – Aziz Behich, Milos Degenek, Mathew Leckie, Jackson Irvine, and Ajdin Hrustic – featured in that match.

Quotes attributable to CommBank Socceroos Head Coach Tony Popovic:

“Brazil are a world-class football nation, and we look forward to facing them in Australia.

“While my immediate focus remains firmly on our 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, I’m delighted that we are locking in fixtures of this caliber, because we want to consistently test ourselves against top-tier opposition moving forward.”

Quotes attributable to Football Australia CEO Martin Kugeler:

“Having Brazil come to Australia to play the CommBank Socceroos is a significant moment for Australian football and for football fans across the country.

“These marquee fixtures are key in our strategy – to inspire our football fans, young and old, across Australia and to showcase the strength and ambition of our national teams at the highest level.

“We would like to thank the Queensland Government for staging these exceptional matches in Townsville and Brisbane and for their ongoing support of our game.

“The two friendlies, against Brazil, are a great opportunity to show the rest of the world what a passionate football nation we are and to give Australians the opportunity to see one of the best teams in the world compete against our best.”

Quotes attributable to the Minister for the Environment and Tourism Andrew Powell:

“Brazil is the most successful national team in FIFA World Cup history and welcoming them to our State just after the 2026 series concludes is a huge win for Queensland.

“This event will attract visitors from across the country and overseas, showcasing our incredible destination to the world and delivering significant economic benefits to our communities.

“Securing this Brazil international tour reinforces our commitment to growing Queensland’s reputation as a global hub for major sporting events and tourism.”
