Community invited to name METRONET gantry cranes

  • Competition for local community to help name the gantry cranes custom-built for the METRONET Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal Project
  • The four gantry cranes will be used in pairs to lift the concrete structures into place for the elevated rail
  • All entrants will go in the draw to win one-of-five family tickets to the Perth Royal Show

Community members from Victoria Park through to Beckenham are invited to help name the custom-built gantry cranes that will build the elevated rail for the METRONET Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal Project.

Open to anyone who lives, studies or works in the project area, the naming competition provides the community with the opportunity to get involved in this transformational project.

Everyone who enters a pair of names goes into the draw to win one-of-five family tickets to the Perth Royal Show.

A colouring in competition being offered to local students also provides another chance to get involved and win a prize.

Tasked with lifting the beams and concrete structures into place along the elevated rail, each gantry crane can lift 120 tonnes.

A pair is required to operate together for the project’s maximum lift of 140 tonnes.

These four-wheel giants are designed to minimise the project’s footprint and help retain more trees and vegetation along the rail corridor.

The competition closes 10 September. More details can be found here.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“The gantry cranes will be prominent fixtures in the community during construction, so it’s fitting they get their own names and the community has the opportunity to choose.

“These cranes play an integral part in the construction of this project and have been custom designed to ensure as many trees as possible are retained while the elevated rail is built.

“They will also help minimise disruptions to residents, as they will move progressively along the rail corridor.

“I’m keen to see lots of entries from the local community they’ll become well known in the community once they arrive on site early next year and start transforming the rail corridor.”

As stated by Cannington MLA Bill Johnston:

“This is a great opportunity to get involved in our Government’s transformational METRONET project.

“I encourage everyone in our local community to get their thinking caps on and come up with some creative names for these gantry cranes.”

As stated by Victoria Park MLA Hannah Beazley:

“I hope many local families, households, students and workers have a crack at naming these gigantic gantry cranes.

“The cranes are vital in achieving this next exciting step of the Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal and have been designed to retain as many trees and vegetation as possible, which is really important to our community and to me.”
