Projects focused on restoring foreshores and providing habitat for native animals will share in $100,000 funding under the third round of the McGowan Government’s Community Rivercare Program.
Over the three-year program, not-for-profit community volunteer groups have shared in a total of $900,000 to help improve wildlife habitat, water quality and address foreshore erosion in the Swan Canning catchment.
Projects receiving funding under the third round, as allocated by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, include:
- Restoration of Lion Mill Creek in Mount Helena by the Friends of Lion Mill Creek
- Revegetation of eroded tributary by the Friends of Upper Lesmurdie Falls
- Restoration of Wangalla Brook by the Friends of Wangalla Brook
- Restoration of Helena River (west of Scott Street) by the Katharine Street River Gang
- Rehabilitation of floodplain area in the Ellen Brook Nature Reserve to protect the western swamp tortoise habitat by the Ellen Brockman Integrated Catchment Group
- Re-establishment of floodplain and linkage to banksia woodland in the Bingham sub-catchment of the Ellen Brook by the Ellen Brockman Integrated Catchment Group
- Riparian restoration and habitat improvement project at Bennett Springs East by the Friends of Bennett Brook

As stated by Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:
“By investing in this program, the McGowan Government has delivered on its election commitment to further recognise and support the important work undertaken by volunteers along river foreshores.
“Community groups are instrumental in protecting and enhancing the natural values of our river, and in turn increasing public enjoyment of the river’s vibrant recreational areas. The dedication and efforts of grant recipients from the three rounds has created incredible improvements to 33 project sites.”
