Contract awarded for Mandurah Estuary Bridge duplication

Duplication of the Mandurah Estuary Bridge has reached another important milestone with a contract now awarded to Georgiou Group Pty Ltd to design and deliver the project.

Georgiou Group Pty Ltd were named as the preferred proponent in September.

The project will deliver significant improvements to congestion and safety in the Mandurah and Dawesville communities with a second, two-lane bridge constructed on the south side of the current Mandurah Estuary Bridge.

The project will also include construction of a new four-metre-wide shared path to improve connectivity and access to recreational activities for the local community.

More than 33,000 vehicles currently use the existing Mandurah Estuary Bridge every day, with congestion an ongoing issue.

Construction is expected to start in early 2024, with site investigations getting underway before the end of the year.

Georgiou Group Pty Ltd has considerable experience in constructing bridges in Western Australia, including the design and construction of the award-winning Mandurah Traffic Bridge, which was completed in 2018.

Georgiou Group Pty Ltd is also part of the Alliance currently delivering the new Fitzroy River Bridge.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments.

As stated by Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King:

“The Australian Government is committed to improving our road infrastructure and connecting and improving liveability for communities.

“The Mandurah Estuary Bridge will help ease ongoing congestion as well as deliver a safer, wider footpath, improving pedestrian safety.”

As stated by Western Australian Transport Minister, Rita Saffioti:

“The Mandurah Estuary Bridge was built more than 40 years ago, but it was not designed to cater for the high volumes of traffic we see along this corridor today.

“The bridge is used by thousands of people every single day, but it has become a bottleneck for commuters travelling within the Mandurah and Dawesville communities.

“Duplicating the bridge will significantly ease the congestion currently experienced on approach to the bridge and cut the travel times for the thousands of commuters every single day.”

As stated by Senator for Western Australia, Louise Pratt:

“The bridge is used by more than 33,000 vehicles daily, but it has become a bottleneck for commuters travelling within the Mandurah and Dawesville communities.

“I’m thrilled with the progress of the project and look forward to the improved commute for locals when the second bridge is complete.”

As stated by State Member for Mandurah, David Templeman:

“The awarding of the contract is another important milestone in delivering this project which is critical for people in the Mandurah community.

“Duplicating the bridge will ensure we minimise that congestion and make the journey safer and quicker for thousands of Mandurah commuters every day.”

As stated by the State Member for Dawesville, Lisa Munday:

“I made a commitment to deliver this bridge duplication for the people of the Dawesville electorate, and that is what we are doing.

“Duplicating this bridge will make the daily commute smoother and safer for residents south of Mandurah and surrounding communities; and remove a frustrating pinch point on our road network.”

As stated by the State Member for Murray-Wellington, Robyn Clarke:

“This contract award is a significant step forward for this project, and will improve commutes for so many in the South West corridor.

“Once complete, the duplication will reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance the overall travel experience for South West residents.”
