Cook Government’s teacher campaign bolsters WA classrooms

  • More than 100 qualified teachers appointed to WA public schools following international recruitment campaign
  • The program targets high quality teachers from the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada
  • The majority of the new teachers will be deployed to regional and remote schools

One hundred and three highly experienced educators from around the world have put their hands up to teach in Western Australian public schools following a successful international recruitment campaign by the Cook Labor Government.

The qualified teachers were recruited from the United Kingdom, New Zealand, South Africa, Republic of Ireland, and Canada, bringing a wealth of global experience to WA classrooms.

Sixty of those teachers kicked off a week-long induction today, ahead of the new school year, where they will have the chance to connect with other educators.

The practical induction will include specialised learning modules on teaching in WA, cultural responsiveness, and classroom management.

The Department is recruiting international teachers through a rigorous selection process, and only when there is no teacher in Australia available to fill the role.

A majority of the teachers have been appointed to regional and remote schools where they will bring their diverse and experienced teaching knowledge to the classroom, while also having the chance to explore unique parts of WA.

This continues the Cook Government’s ongoing commitment to regional education following the success of the Regional Attraction and Retention Incentive package and a significant number of major school redevelopment projects.

As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

“The response to the major WA Government international teacher recruitment campaign has been overwhelmingly positive, with successful applicants hailing from around the world including the United Kingdom, New Zealand, South Africa, Republic of Ireland, and Canada.

“These teachers were appointed to their respective schools following a rigorous selection process. They were carefully chosen to ensure their skills and expertise match the needs of the school and its students.

“They bring their wealth of world-class international experience to WA classrooms to inspire our bright young minds.

“It is vital we attract the highest quality teachers to the public education system in Western Australia and ensure we have the right people for the job.

“The teachers are looking forward to settling in, immersing themselves in their local communities, and being welcomed at their schools.

“Western Australia is an incredible place to live and work, and I have no doubt the teachers will enjoy exploring our vast state and all that it has to offer.

“The majority of these teachers have been appointed to regional and remote schools where they look forward to hitting the ground running and having a significant impact on the education of WA students.”
