Cook Labor Government helps farmers fight fuel and fertiliser costs

  • Healthy Estuaries WA program helps agricultural sector apply fertiliser more efficiently, reducing costs
  • Returning Healthy Estuaries WA participants can receive $100 discount when they refer a mate to the program
  • Participating farms have reduced phosphorus use by almost 1,500 tonnes over the last decade
  • Part of Cook Labor Government’s commitment to protecting and preserving waterways

South West grazing farmers are being encouraged to apply for a Cook Labor Government program that helps cut fertiliser costs, lift productivity and protect local waterways.

The 2026-27 Healthy Estuaries WA fertiliser management program is now open, providing whole-of-farm soil testing and expert agronomic advice to help farmers target fertiliser use and avoid costly over-application.

Since 2009, more than 2,300 farmers have participated, with soil testing carried out across around 400,000 hectares and nearly 40,000 paddocks.

Participating farms have reduced phosphorus use by almost 1,500 tonnes over the past decade, while saving an average of $8,700 per farm each year.

Farmers can also attend workshops to interpret soil test results and develop practical, tailored fertiliser plans suited to their farm, soil conditions, and budget.

Participants consistently report improved decision-making and a shift toward more science-based fertiliser use.

Returning Healthy Estuaries WA participants can also refer a friend to the program, with both farmers receiving a $100 discount on soil testing fees under the Soil Mates initiative.

Valued at more than $5,000, the program supports beef, dairy, and sheep enterprises with at least 40 hectares of cleared arable land.

The Healthy Estuaries WA program is co-delivered by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Peel-Harvey Catchment Council, Leschenault Catchment Council, GeoCatch, Lower Blackwood Land Conservation District Committee, Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee, Torbay Catchment Group, and Oyster Harbour Catchment Group.

Expressions of interest are open until Wednesday, 22 July 2026 at estuaries.dwer.wa.gov.au .

Healthy Estuaries WA is a State Government program delivered in partnership with Soils – New Horizons, a bilateral partnership between the Australian Government and the Western Australian Government.

As stated by Water Minister Don Punch:

“As fuel and fertiliser prices rise, every on-farm decision matters more than ever.

“Healthy Estuaries WA is delivering practical, science-based support that helps farmers cut costs, lift productivity, and protect the waterways South West communities rely on.

“This program also reflects the Cook Labor Government’s commitment to taking real action to safeguard our environment and waterways, while building resilience for future generations.”

As stated by Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson:

“This program is delivering real economic benefits for the South West by helping farmers cut input costs, boost productivity, and strengthen the industries that support local jobs and regional communities.

“By investing in programs like Healthy Estuaries WA, the Cook Labor Government is backing our regions by supporting farm businesses, driving local economic activity, and protecting the natural assets that regional jobs depend on.”
