- Cook Labor Government secures long-term protection and management of Baigup Wetlands
- Eastern portion of wetlands to become Crown Reserve under management of City of Bayswater
- Cook Labor Government protecting the environment for future generations
The Cook Labor Government is acting to better protect and manage the Baigup Wetlands, ensuring this significant natural area along the Swan River can be enjoyed by the community for generations to come.
Currently owned by the Western Australian Planning Commission, the eastern portion of the wetlands will be established as a Crown Reserve and placed under the care and management of the City of Bayswater.
To support the transfer, the Cook Labor Government will provide the City with approximately $1 million for initial improvement and protection works and ongoing maintenance over a five-year period.
Baigup Wetlands provides valuable habitat for native plants and wildlife unique to the region. Transferring the area to local government management will help ensure these wetlands are protected and preserved for years to come, while offering the community a natural space to connect with and enjoy the Swan River environment.
The wetlands form part of the Bush Forever network, which identifies and protects significant bushland across Perth.
As stated by Planning and Lands Minister John Carey:
“By bringing the wetlands under local management, we are supporting a more consistent approach to caring for the area while keeping it accessible for the community.
“Being part of the Bush Forever network highlights the importance of Baigup Wetlands, and this transfer helps secure its long-term protection.
“This decision follows the tireless advocacy of the Member for Maylands and the Baigup Wetlands Interest Group.”
As stated by the Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn:
“The Cook Labor Government is protecting Western Australia’s natural environment by investing in the long-term future of places like Baigup Wetlands.
“This is an important step to preserve valuable habitat for native plants and wildlife, while ensuring local communities can continue to enjoy and connect with nature along the Swan River.
“Working in partnership with local government means these important environmental assets can be protected, restored and enjoyed for generations to come.”
As stated by Maylands MLA Dan Bull:
“Baigup Wetlands is an important ecological part of the Maylands electorate and a treasured area for locals.
“I want to thank the members of the Baigup Wetlands Interest Group, both for their advocacy in safeguarding this area and for their ongoing voluntary rehabilitation work.
“This decision ensures that future generations will continue to be able to enjoy the area as it is improved and protected from an environmental perspective.”
