Cottesloe golfer, Jackson Wood, has scooped the title of WA’s highest individual fundraiser after raising more than $12,000 for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services by taking part in The Longest Day golfing challenge at Cottesloe Golf Club.

Jackson said his motivation to sign up for The Longest Day was to show support for a close friend and a love of golf.

“One of my close mates received news that a family member was diagnosed with cancer,” Jackson said.

“I thought signing up for the Longest Day was a great way to show my support for him and his family during a difficult time.

“I was excited to be able to show my support through an additional lens and perhaps make a difficult time somewhat more bearable knowing he had the support of his friends and the wider community.

“Further, with my ability to raise money for the Longest Day, I was able to bring my wider network of friends, family and work colleagues along the journey as well.”

Jackson and his friend, Andrew Ford, completed 72 holes in just under 13 hours, beginning with their first tee-off in pitch black at 5.15am and finishing at 6.00pm.

“Our biggest challenge was sore feet and playing the first five holes in pitch black,” he said.

“We tried to use glow-in-the-dark golf balls but they exploded on our first shot of the day.

“We had the course to ourselves for the day which was great and a couple of people walked with us for nine holes during the day.”

Jackson said he and Andrew were proud to support local WA cancer research and support services, and are in awe at everyone’s generosity.

“The original goal for our team, Iron Men, was to raise $4000, so we have been blown away by everyone’s willingness to support such a great cause, as our team has now raised more than $16,000,” he said.

“It is a privilege to know that our actions are directly helping people in need, and I think it’s important to take time out of our busy lives and support others who might not be as lucky in life.”

Cancer Council WA’s Community Engagement Coordinator, Nicola Vandewerve, said that she was overwhelmed by the incredible generosity and commitment shown by Jackson, Andrew and their supporters.

“We are thrilled Jackson and his team raised such a significant amount for Cancer Council WA,” Ms Vandewerve said.

“Every dollar raised through The Longest Day goes towards helping those West Australians affected by cancer through the funding of life-saving research, prevention programs and support services.
