Bass Coast Shire Council has adopted a new Communications, Engagement and Advocacy Strategy 2026-2029, bringing together three key areas into one clear plan for how Council connects with the community, listens to feedback and advocates for what matters most.
Adopted at the June Council meeting, the new Strategy combines previously separate functions into one coordinated approach – recognising that good communication, genuine engagement and strong advocacy all work hand‑in‑hand to deliver better outcomes for Bass Coast.
So, what does that mean in practice?
- Communication is how Council keeps people informed: from project updates and service information to the good news stories that celebrate our community.
- Engagement is how Council listens: making sure decisions are guided by local knowledge, lived experience and community input.
- Advocacy is how Council speaks up: working with all levels of government to secure funding and support for local priorities.
Over the past few years, this approach has already delivered some impressive results. Council has grown its digital channels like Coastell and Engage Bass Coast, increased reach through creative video storytelling, and delivered its largest ever engagement project: Towards a Better Bass Coast.
Behind the scenes, strong advocacy has helped secure major funding for the region, including:
- $8 million for the Cowes Streetscape project
- $1.7 million for the Stewart Road Bridge in Kernot
- $632,000 for the Former Wonthaggi Secondary College site planning
Council has also strengthened partnerships, collaborated on regional campaigns, and taken local priorities directly to decision‑makers in Melbourne and Canberra.
These successes highlight how listening to the community and telling clear, compelling stories can support strong advocacy and deliver results.
The new Strategy builds on this momentum, with exciting initiatives ahead, including a new Council website, improved reporting back to the community, stronger engagement with under‑represented groups, and new tools to help communities advocate for the issues that matter to them.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said the new approach reflects what the community has been asking for.
“People want to know what’s happening, have their say and see results – and that’s exactly what this Strategy is about,” Cr Tessari said.
“We’ve already seen how powerful it is when we bring these things together, whether it’s securing funding, telling great local stories or genuinely listening to our community.”
