Council commits to sustainable future

Improved recycling methods are part of the new Council-wide Sustainability Policy.

Logan City Council has adopted a new policy to deliver improved and enduring sustainability across the entire organisation.

The Sustainability Policy and Framework aligns with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals as outlined by the United Nations in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The policy, which is far more comprehensive than the traditional environmental definition of sustainability, also supports Council’s City Vision and Priorities as identified in the 2017-2022 Corporate Plan.

All Council employees will now be required to consider ‘Principles of Sustainability’ in their decisions and activities across all areas of Council business.

The adoption of the Sustainability Policy does not impose any additional unfunded costs to Council.

Logan City Council Director Strategy and Sustainability, David Hansen, said the new policy would be a key driver for innovation and a circular economy.

“Sustainable practices and decision-making will deliver positive benefits for Council, the community and the environment, both now and in the future,” he said.

There are four pillars of sustainability under the new whole-of-Council policy. They are:

  • Environment: Council aims to reduce waste, energy consumption and carbon emissions. It also will strive to be water-efficient and use recycled or reusable goods where practical.
  • Community: Council will provide services, facilities and amenities that promote a healthy and active lifestyle that is inclusive, connected, safe and resilient.
  • Economy: Council will promote a prosperous local economy and develop local job opportunities that align with the new policy.
  • Governance: Council will govern in an ethical and transparent manner. It will provide opportunities for community participation in decision making while considering the environmental, social and economic impact of any decisions.

Under the new policy Council will also encourage service providers to think differently about their products, technologies, processes and business models.
