Logan City Council has written to the State Government requesting that the Ekka public holiday in Logan be moved to Friday, August 14 for this year only.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced that the People’s Day show holiday for Brisbane residents will be moved from Wednesday, August 12 to Friday, August 14 this year.

Although the annual RNA show, known as the Ekka, has been cancelled this year because of the pandemic, it is hoped retaining and moving the holiday will boost intra-state travel and help stimulate the COVID-19 impacted tourism industry.

Traditionally, the City of Logan observes the Ekka show holiday on the Monday of Ekka week.

Mayor Darren Power said the decision to request a change to the date for this year followed consultation with the community and Councillors.

“Before I went through community consultation, I asked each and every one of the Councillors if they supported it and they all said ‘yes’,” Cr Power said.

“A lot of Logan people work in Brisbane and have a different (Ekka show) holiday to their children.

“This will enable them to share a day together.

“I encourage all Logan residents to get into the spirit of what the Premier is calling the ‘People’s Long Weekend’.

“Please get out and about in our community and support our local businesses.

“But, as always, make sure you do so in a way that is safe by respecting social distancing and practising good hygiene.”

Under the Holidays Act 1983, Council must seek State Government approval to change the date of a show or special holiday.
