Council Joins Ecotourism Australia Hall Of Fame

Decades of Townsville City Council delivering high-quality ecological education tours has been recognised with the organisation being entered into Ecotourism Australia’s Hall of Fame.

Ecotourism Australia is the country’s peak body for ecotourism and sustainable tourism. The organisation’s Hall of Fame includes more than 60 national leading certified tourism operators.

Council has been inducted into the Hall of Fame for its Eco Catchment Tours. The tours first started in 2006, delivering free tours for schools, TAFE, university groups, businesses and members of the community. These tours help explain the water cycle from creek to coral, including the infrastructure that helps maintain Townsville’s natural waterways and environment.

Mayor Nick Dametto said it was an honour for Council to be recognised in Ecotourism Australia’s Hall of Fame.

“Since Council’s Eco Catchment Tours started 20 years ago, they have highlighted our city’s catchments, wetlands, waterways and natural ecosystems to thousands of residents, students, visitors and community groups,” Cr Dametto said.

“The tours encourage participants to actively care for and protect our environment in their everyday lives through environmental education and immersive experiences.

“Entering the Ecotourism Australia Hall of Fame is a recognition of the program’s longevity and a celebration of the many people who have contributed to its success across two decades.

“Well done to everyone at Council who has played a part in achieving this significant milestone.

“Council was awarded ECO Destination certification at the Nature Tourism Level by Ecotourism Australia in 2024, so to also be inducted into the Hall of Fame just goes to show Council’s continued commitment to sustainable tourism across Townsville.

“Being part of this highly respected national certification program has increased Townsville’s visibility and strengthened our reputation as a leading tourism destination in Australia.”
