Council is playing its part to address climate change, with the endorsement of the Draft Central Goldfields Climate Action Plan at this week’s Council Meeting (29/03).

The Draft Plan is now available to view at www.engage.cgoldshire.vic.gov.au/climateaction with the community invited to review the Draft Plan and provide feedback between today (31/03) and Thursday 21 April, 2022.

The Draft Plan, which draws on expert advice from Ndevr Environmental, identifies priority areas and actions to be carried out in the next two years and beyond.

Central Goldfields Shire Flynn Ward Councillor Liesbeth Long said she was looking forward to hearing the community’s feedback on the Draft Plan.

“The science on climate change is clear and we know we are already experiencing changes to climate patterns locally.

“Climate Change is important to all people in our community and this Plan sets out what we as a Council can do, understanding that everyone in our community can make a difference and has a responsibility to reduce their footprint.

“We as a Council are proud to take the lead in this space by committing to net zero emissions for Council operations by 2030.

“Whilst Council can show leadership in this space, we are stronger together. We know there is wonderful action already taking place in our community. Across all sectors, our community is and preparing for, and acting to mitigate, climate change in many ways. By connecting and combining efforts and building on existing action, our community can continue to make a real difference.

“Community input in the development of the Draft Plan has been invaluable through the work of the Climate Action Collaboration.

“Thank you to community members Tony Macer, Barry Parsons, Jeff Hoober, Bronwen Haywood, Troy Butler for their time and knowledge – their unwavering input and passion has certainly helped support us with our vision for climate action in the Central Goldfields.

“If climate change is new to you – that’s ok. The plan has been designed to engage people new to the concept – all we ask is that you have a read and get clear on how we can all make a difference to climate change.”

Climate Action Collaboration committee member Tony Macer said it was a proud moment for the community and Council as, together, we have developed this working climate action plan.

“We will be doing our very best to reduce emissions, engage residents in sustainable living and promote the uptake of renewable energy.”

Feedback is invited by 5pm, Thursday 21 April via the following ways:
