Council moves to formalise position on digital signage

The next step in introducing new rules around advertising devices, including digital signage, was given the go ahead by Council this morning.

The proposed rules aim to protect the character and amenity of the region, while providing options for businesses and organisations to promote their offerings.

They will formalise Council’s policy position on digital advertising signage that was adopted in August.

Digital signage will be restricted on residential streets; areas with sensitive environments; and identified character precincts, such as Babinda, Gordonvale, Palm Cove, Edge Hill, Freshwater, Stratford and beachfront areas.

Introducing the new rules requires amendments to the planning scheme and creation of a new local law. Council will now commence the formal process for bringing about these changes, starting with a review by the State (State Interest Check) and then a formal public consultation process giving residents the opportunity to comment on the proposals.
