Yarra City Council is investing in a 1,524 m2 parcel of land on Wangaratta Street, Richmond, that it will preserve as open space for the suburb.
The land on the corner of Wangaratta and Stewart Street is being acquired for $3.4m from VicTrack. The acquisition will be finalised once VicTrack completes its subdivision of the land.
Yarra City Council Mayor, Cr Stephen Jolly, said that with the municipality’s rapidly growing population, investing in accessible public open space has never been more important.
“Preserving open space like this is vital in a suburb like Richmond which currently only has 12% (23.46ha) of open space,” he said.
“This acquisition safeguards precious green space for the Richmond community despite its growing population.”
