Townsville City Council has started relining a 1km section of the sewerage main beneath Nathan Street in Cranbrook and Heatley this week.
Council Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said the $730,000 project upgrade ensure that the gravity sewer main could continue to function for many years into the future.
“Townsville City Council has committed to spending more than $23 million this financial year to construct new and upgrade existing water and wastewater infrastructure across our suburbs to ensure that residents continue to receive a quality service,” Cr Cook said.
“This relining will reduce the risk of any water leaks or failures from the aging pipeline as it ages, protecting residential properties and Council’s assets.”
Cr Cook said the construction works would take place between 6am and 6pm to minimise any disruptions to residents.
“Nathan Street is one of Townsville busiest roads, servicing major shopping centres and a significant number of residences and this work is happening in a mainly residential area with minimal impacts on businesses,” Cr Cook said.
“To minimise any disruptions to traffic, lane closures will be in place during normal working hours only with traffic management on site.
“This project began on 4 May and is expected to take 6 weeks to complete, and I thank residents for their patience.”
