Around 1 in 6 people in Australia have disability. Cessnock City Council is committed to improving inclusivity in the community and is seeking feedback on the draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2021-25.
Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said the Plan builds on the first DIAP adopted by Council in 2017.
“The DIAP provides a framework for us to take practical steps to create a more inclusive community for people with disability. Since the adoption of the first DIAP we have made progress. These practical improvements include hearing loops in the Council Chambers, improved access to Council events and the introduction of the National Relay Service to assist customers who are deaf, hard of hearing and/or have a speech impairment. We know a lot more can be done and DIAP 2021-25 will assist us in driving change.”
There has also been significant improvements to local parks and playgrounds to ensure everyone can play! Bridges Hill Park Playground, Veterans Memorial Park, Johns Park, Miller Park and Jeffries Park have been upgraded to include accessible pathways, park furniture and inclusive play elements.
DIAP 2021-25 has been developed with the help of the community. Council engaged with people with disability, family and friends of people with disability and local services providers.
Council thanked the community for their involvement as it has provided invaluable insights into the barriers local people face.
The Plan focuses on four key areas of action:
- Developing positive community attitudes and behaviours
- Creating liveable communities
- Supporting access to meaningful employment
- Improving access to mainstream services through better systems and processes
