MidCoast Council’s Geoff Matheson is the NSW Water Industry’s Operator of the Year.
Geoff, a Senior Process Operator, received the award at this year’s Water Industry Operators Association conference.
The association is Australia’s peak body for people in water industry operational roles, and the annual award is presented to water or wastewater operators in recognition of their excellent performance, initiative, and attention to detail.
“Congratulations to Geoff on winning this award! It’s great to see Council staff follow up again this year after Senior Process Controller, Matty Agnew was recognised with the award last year,” said Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott.
Geoff operates the water and sewage treatment plants at Bulahdelah and supports other operators in the southern area. He has spent 10 years working with MidCoast Council.
During the March floods, he worked tirelessly to overcome the challenges of treating water to meet safe drinking guidelines and sewage to meet NSW Environmental Protection Authority license conditions.
He has also carried out several pilots and trials on the Bulahdelah Water Treatment Plant to balance out its naturally high mineral levels. Over the last five years, his work has helped improve the performance of the water treatment plant considerably.
“It’s quite an honour to be recognised for the work that I do,” said Geoff.
