Georges River Council is looking for community members that love talking to people and have a passion for helping others, to volunteer as English Conversation Class teachers or assistants.
English Conversation Classes are held at the Hurstville and Clive James Kogarah Libraries and provide a welcoming and relaxed opportunity for adults to practice their English-speaking skills.
Volunteers will work with a group of learners to lead discussions on a variety of topics, from current events to popular culture. We’re looking for volunteers who are:
- Positive, patient and understanding
- Good at listening and responding
- Flexible and adaptable
- Enthusiastic about learning new cultures
- Keen to connect with community and make a difference.
Georges River Council Mayor Nick Katris said, “Our community is rich in culture and diversity and we are committed to supporting our multicultural residents by offering programs and initiatives to support their needs.

Prior teaching experience or confidence in working with multicultural communities is valuable, but not essential. Council will provide volunteers with different resources and some training to support in the delivery of classes.
Volunteers are expected to be able to make a time commitment of approximately 1.5 hours per week for eight weeks during the school term.
