The ‘Green The Street’ initiative is being rolled out in High Street and Nolan Street in Maryborough – in response to feedback received by Council from the local business community.

In August 2020 businesses in the High Street Nolan Street area were invited to collaborate with Council through Place Score’s JumpStart High Street program. The focus was to identify key projects that Council and the business community could work together on as we drive economic recovery.

‘Green The Street’ focuses on creating a visually pleasing streetscape that all members of the community can be proud of and want to spend time in. Areas in Nolan Street, Alma Street and High Street were identified as locations that would create an impact.

Council’s Open Space team have started work to revitalise the existing infrastructure in the precinct.

Using existing garden beds, the Nolan Street pedestrian crossing has been planted with new Crepe Myrtle trees and red and white petunias. Work has also commenced in Alma Street to refresh existing garden beds with climate suitable plants.

Work will continue over coming months with the refreshing of existing garden beds in High Street, with plants being sourced from Carramar Nursery, further supporting our Go Local Frist campaign.

In addition to new plantings, the JumpStart High Street group also identified the desire for place markers. Items that strengthen the community’s connection to the High Street area, build a sense of ownership and welcome through a series of temporary art work and sculpture displays.

Central Goldfields Shire Administrator Hugh Delahunty said Council would continue to work with the JumpStart group and community on this project.

“Creating a sense of connection to a place is important as we continue our recovery from the effects of business and social restrictions through Covid-19. Public spaces that both the business community and general community want to spend time in will help deliver economic results of our local economy.

“Central Goldfields Shire has a unique and vibrant business community and the space they operate in should also reflect that. We’re grateful for the contribution and the enthusiasm of the JumpStart group in helping to deliver these initiatives to the community.”
