Council welcomes Mass Vaccination Centre in Wollongong

Wollongong City Council has welcomed the news that a NSW Health COVID-19 mass vaccination centre will be established in Wollongong, with the former David Jones building within the Crown Street Mall selected by the NSW Government as the location.

Wollongong City Council General Manager Greg Doyle said it is great news for the residents of our local government area and one that Council is pleased to support.

“We are committed to supporting our community to have access to vaccinations”.

Over the coming weeks, Council staff will work closely with NSW Health on the development of the vaccination centre.

“We have a good relationship with NSW Health and have been there to assist them with logistics when they’ve had to open pop-up test clinics at different times over the past year,” Mr Doyle said.

“Wollongong City Council will continue to assist NSW Health with their planning for the establishment of the mass vaccination centre. NSW Health have a well-developed approach, and this includes how the community accesses the facility, including transport and parking,” he said.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said it was a win for the city on several levels. “Not only does it put easy access to vaccination on our residents’ doorstep, but it’ll also provide businesses and retailers in the Mall and surrounds the opportunity to capitalise on the additional footfall the hub will bring.”

“It will be a huge operation and one that we support to get the vaccines out as quickly and safely as possible for our community.” Cr Bradbery said.
