Councillor Message Cr Anna De Villiers Tuesday 10 October 2023

What is networking? Networking, in its essence, is not a new concept. It has existed in various forms for centuries. Networking involves building and maintaining relationships with people for mutual benefit, whether in personal, social or professional contexts.

Historically, people have always connected with others for various reasons – whether it was for trade, alliances, community support, or simply to expand their horizons. In the past networking may have been more localized and reliant on physical proximity, but the fundamental idea of forming connections and relationships to achieve common goals has remained constant.

However, the term “networking” as we know it today has evolved and gained significant prominence in recent decades, particularly with the rise of the internet and globalization. Modern networking often involves using technology and various platforms to connect with people across the globe, amplifying the potential reach and impact of networking efforts.

The value of networking in all spheres of life, including personal, professional and social, is immense. I personally value the opportunity to attend conferences and meetings offered by various groups and organisations in local government – meeting people with different insights and perspectives, as well as roles and responsibilities, but all with a common goal. The conferences and training opportunities offered are invaluable in affording opportunities to learn and grow, both as a person but also in my role as Councillor. One often comes away from conferences and meetings with renewed energy, enthusiasm and focus, approaching potential problems and issues differently.

We have come to the end of the year, with only one grant writing workshop left for 2023. The value of connecting, sharing ideas, learning that your problems and issues are not unique, finding solutions, has been invaluable. It was wonderful to be part of this network. We will continue with this initiative next year. Thank you to all the participants for your contributions and for making this initiative so successful.

In conclusion, networking is not a new concept but has evolved with time, adapting to changes in technology and society. Its fundamental value lies in connecting with people to create opportunities, share knowledge, find support, foster collaboration and facilitate personal and professional growth.
