Councillors to vote for Ballarat Mayor for final year of Council term tonight

City of Ballarat councillors will elect a Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the final year of the Council term at a Town Hall meeting tonight.

City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Des Hudson said it has been a true honour to serve the City of Ballarat over the past year.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time as Mayor over the past year and have appreciated all the support from the Councillors – it’s been a great team effort,” he said.

“I have also been fortunate to work with an incredible range of staff at the City of Ballarat, attend many fantastic community events and work with some great community groups.”

Tonight’s council meeting will feature a historic town crier and the traditional ringing of the heritage Alfred Bells at Town Hall, requiring specialist bellringers. As is the tradition, Sovereign Hill’s Red Coats will also be attendance.

The Alfred Bells do not ring often. However, the largest bell was recently rung 96 times to honour the life of Britain’s longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

The mayoral and deputy mayoral elections will be held during an unscheduled council meeting at Town Hall on Monday 13 November 2023 at 6.30pm.

The council meeting is open to the public and will also be livestreamed online.

On Tuesday 14 November 2023, the elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be presented to Ballarat in an official proclamation from the Town Crier, at 8.30am.
