Attorney General John Quigley is pleased to announce that the Collie Courthouse will remain open following a review of court services by the Department of Justice (the Department).
As part of its duty to ensure taxpayers’ dollars are used effectively, the Department reviews services by the Magistrates Court all around Western Australia.
A review into the Collie Courthouse was undertaken earlier this year, with consultation taking place with stakeholders as part of the process.
As part of the review process, consideration was given to closing the courthouse services and transferring them to Bunbury.
The review found that the closure would have a significant impact on the Collie community.
Following local opposition to the proposal, consultation with the community and strong advocacy from Collie MLA Jodie Hanns, a decision was made for the courthouse to remain open.
As stated by Attorney General John Quigley:
“I am pleased to announce that following consultation with stakeholders, including State Government agencies, the Shire of Collie and organisations that service the Collie township, the Department of Justice will not be proceeding with the closure of the Collie Courthouse.
“Earlier in the year, the Department sought feedback on the impact to the community if changes were made to court services in Collie.
“There was a strong opposition to the closure of the facility. It was abundantly clear that the closure would have a significant effect on the Collie community.
“I commend local member, Jodie Hanns, for her strong advocacy on behalf of her constituents for the retention of this important service.”
As stated by Collie MLA Jodie Hanns:
“I am delighted to hear that the Collie Courthouse will remain open and continue to provide such a valuable service within our community.
“Since hearing about plans for the closure of the courthouse, I have been fighting to ensure it remains open.
“My petition to save the courthouse services has gathered over 1,000 signatures in just four weeks.
“I’d like to thank the community of Collie for supporting my efforts and thank the Attorney General for this decision today.”
