Topic: Covid and its consequences: What have we learned?

The impacts of Covid-19 will be with us for many years to come. An understanding of Long-Covid, which affects an estimated ten percent of those infected with the virus, is of vital important for the future health of all societies.

La Trobe’s panel will discuss Covid and its long-term consequences.

Professor Stephanie Gras

NHMRC Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the La Trobe University Institute for Molecular Science

Professor Gras leads a laboratory focused on understanding how to combat viral infections. Viruses are part of day-to-day encounters that our immune system needs to deal with. How the immune system “sees”, recognises and eliminates viral infection is not fully understood. Professor Gras’ lab works to understand the immune system action when faced with a viral infection.

Dr Sarah Annesley

Tracey Banivanula Mar Senior Research Fellow, Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory

Dr Annesley investigates diseases that affect the central nervous system. She focuses specifically on Parkinson’s Disease, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and more recently Long COVID. Long COVID shares many clinical overlaps with ME/CFS and Sarah’s research group aims to discover how these two disorders compare at the cellular level. She is currently conducting a study into Long-Covid.

Dr Deb Gleeson

Associate Professor Public Health

Deborah Gleeson Profile | La Trobe University

Dr Gleeson’s main research focus is international trade agreements and their implications for public health and access to medicines, she has published extensively in this area.
