Crash After Fleeing Driver Incident At Hamilton

As put by Waikato District Commander Superintendent Scott Gemmell:

One person is in a critical condition after a crash following a fleeing driver incident in Hamilton today.

Just after 11:50am, Police signalled for a vehicle to stop on Te Aroha St, which it failed to do so.

Police did not pursue the vehicle due to the manner of driving, however maintained sight of the vehicle via traffic cameras as it travelled east.

The vehicle has continued to travel at speed without Police presence. It was then spiked by Police.

The vehicle continued to travel at high speed and just after 12:05pm collided with another vehicle on Grey Street, near the Wellington Street intersection.

Four people were injured in the crash. The driver of the offending vehicle sustained critical injuries, and three members of the public were moderately injured.

The road is expected to remain closed for several hours while a scene examination is carried out by the Serious Crash Unit.

A number of investigations are underway, and the matter will be referred to the IPCA.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident remain ongoing.

As part of our investigation, Police are wanting to hear from anybody who witnesses this incident, or anybody with CCTV or dashcam footage from the time of the crash.
