Creative technologies set to drive Adelaide CBD resurgence

The Marshall Government is calling all creatives to take up the CreaTech City Challenge to bring new life to the City of Adelaide.

Our city is your canvas and we’re inviting you to bring fun and excitement to Adelaide’s streets, buildings and laneways with digital activities, displays and events.

Grants totalling $300,000 are available as part of the Adelaide CreaTech City Challenge, a collaboration between the City of Adelaide, Adelaide Economic Development Agency (AEDA) and the Department for Innovation and Skills (DIS), funded through the Capital City Committee’s Development Program.

CreaTech brings together creative skills and emerging technologies to engage audiences, support business growth and encourage investment.

Proposals will need to be for projects that occur in a public space in the CBD or that activate under-utilised space that is highly visible and publicly accessible.

Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni said the challenge would aim to revitalise the city.

“It’s been a very tough time for businesses in the CBD with more people working from home and having less foot-traffic in the city,” Minister Pisoni said.

“This challenge will use technology in a creative way to generate experiences that will encourage more people to return to the CBD, boosting businesses and providing a kickstart to the local economy.

“South Australia is full of creative and innovative minds who have wonderful ideas that are just waiting to be turned into reality.

“All they need is the opportunity, and that is what this challenge provides.”

Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said she is looking forward to seeing the proposals put forward.

“This challenge demonstrates the City of Adelaide’s commitment to being a test bed for innovation and is an incredible opportunity to create new experiences on our main streets and laneways, bringing economic growth and curating beautiful, surprising places celebrating our culture and creativity,” the Lord Mayor said.

“This challenge will help to nurture our creative tech businesses, create new collaborations and give people an exciting new platform to showcase their talents.”

Adelaide Economic Development Agency Managing Director Ian Hill encouraged people to be bold with their ideas and proposals.

“This is an open opportunity for South Australian businesses to be a part of redefining the retail experience, reimagining unused space and delivering immersive activities that bring people to the city,” Mr Hill said.

Expressions of interest opened on 16 December 2021, ahead of formal applications opening on 9 February 2022.
