Cricket club’s grant win for local community

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Recreation

The Old Beach Cricket Club has proven itself to be an exceptional off-field performer, taking advantage of a $50,000 grant for a training facility and improving amenities for spectators as well as the wider community.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, said the Old Beach Cricket Club played an important role in encouraging the local community to be healthy and active, fielding teams across various grades in the Southern Cricket Association.

“I’ve often said that it doesn’t matter how Tasmanians move to be active and healthy, and these upgraded facilities here in Old Beach make it easier than ever for the local community to do so,” Minister Street said.

“This is a terrific example of a community-based club working hard to provide active sport and recreation in its local area and partnering with the Rockliff Liberal Government to deliver an outcome that benefits everyone who uses Cloak Oval.”

Vice-President of the Old Beach Cricket Club, Tony Allanby said, “The Club applied for and received a $50,000 grant to upgrade its training nets through the Rockliff Liberal Government’s Improving the Playing Field grants program.

When that project was completed well within the original budget, the Club requested and received approval from Active Tasmania to use the balance of the funds to build a shelter and provide seating for supporters.”

While the Improving the Playing Field grants program is now closed, eligible sports clubs can still submit applications for the large grants stream of the Tasmanian Active Infrastructure Grants Program which closes at 2pm on 13 November.

The large grants stream will provide grants of $70,001 to $500,000. Applicants must commit at least 20 per cent towards the project cost.
