CSIRO scientists honoured in Academy of Science awards

CSIRO

Dr Liz Dennis and Dr Keith Bannister have received honorific awards, alongside 18 other outstanding researchers from across Australia.

Dr Liz Dennis has been awarded the Ruby Payne-Scott Medal and Lecture, which recognises the nation’s best and most respected researchers in the physical or biological sciences. Dr Dennis’ research in plant genetics has contributed to food security around the world by creating high yielding crops.

Dr Keith Bannister has been awarded the Pawsey Medal, which recognises outstanding research in physics by early career researchers. Dr Bannister’s work on the detection of fast radio bursts has opened up a new field of study in radio astronomy and enabled measurements of the Universe’s missing matter – solving one of astronomy’s biggest questions.

Both Dr Dennis and Dr Bannister received awards named after past CSIRO researchers – Dr Joseph Lade Pawsey who pioneered radio astronomy in Australia with his research into the Sun’s effects on radar, and Ruby Payne-Scott who was a leading figure in radio astronomy and women’s rights in the workforce.
