Damaging winds rip through eastern NSW

NSW SES

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) has had a busy weekend with volunteers responding to 300 incidents since Friday afternoon. Wind gusts exceeding 93km/hour brought down trees and parts of roofs and balconies. Volunteers are still active today assisting with the clean-up.

The storm damage has been localised across the Illawarra, Shoalhaven, Highlands and Hunter with the worst affected areas being:

  • Wollongong – 37 incidents
  • Shellharbour City – 32 incidents
  • Kiama – 26 incidents
  • Dapto – 23 incidents
  • Nowra – 17 incidents
  • Wingecarribee – 15 incidents
  • Blue Mountains – 14 incidents
  • City of Newcastle – 12 incidents

The majority of incidents received by the NSW SES relate to trees down on roads and properties and roof damage. There have been no reports of any significant damage to public infrastructure.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan said while the weather has eased, it is important the public prepare for future events.

“Simple things like tidying around your yard, trimming branches and trees that are close to your property and cleaning your gutters can help ensure your houses are prepared for storms,” she said.

“Loose items in yards and balconies can quickly become projectiles and dangerous in high winds.”

For emergency help in floods and storms, call the NSW SES on 132 500. In life threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
