Merely 5 months into implementation of the assisted suicide scheme in Victoria a terminally ill patient with Motor Neurone Disease has died of complications whiledealing with major frustrations trying to access the scheme.
Her husband spoke to ABC Melbourne radio last night and exposed what he called the “gross incompetence” of the government.
“Daniel Andrews’ government’s assisted suicide scheme was lauded as a panacea to patients suffering at the end of life” said Mary Collier, CEO Right to Life Australia, “but it fails to take care of the very people he purported to be advocating for.”.
She continued, “The Premier promised that this is ‘the safest scheme in the world, with the most rigorous checks and balances.’ But, as we predicted the 66 safeguards are not worth the paper they are written on. It has been proven time and time again that in relation to assisted suicide so-called safeguards do not work.”
Ms Collier said, “The scheme had a highly funded 18 month implementation phase in Victoria with enormous expenditure of taxpayers’ money invested in setting up a whole department of bureaucrats, highly paid Board of Management, doctor training programmes and mobile drug delivery systems.”
Ms Collier continued, “Daniel Andrews’ claim that ‘this is about compassion and choice, and giving Victorians the support and care they deserve in their final moments’ is a farce.
At the very end of life, this flawed scheme did not give a very sick patient the comfort and peace she needed.”
