The Northern Territory Police Force are investigating after a child drowned in Katherine yesterday.
Around 5:15pm, police received a report that a 9-year-old boy had entered a drainpipe at the Katherine Low Level and not resurfaced.
Police attended the scene and deployed divers who located the child at 1:45am.
Support is being provided to the child’s family, who were present at Katherine Low Level.
Commander Neil Hayes said “This is an incredibly tragic incident, and we are providing welfare to the attending members.
“Our thoughts are with the boy’s family.
“A report will be prepared for the Coroner.”
