DEFENCE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES HEAD TO THE BEACH FOR HI-TECH RESCUE
Researchers from Defence Science and Technology (DST) at Edinburgh have teamed up with Surf Life Saving South Australia (SLSSA) today to conduct a large scale simulated emergency rescue exercise in Adelaide.
SLSSA, working with numerous emergency services controlled the training exercise and coordinated the many simulated ‘injured’ volunteers in the search and rescue training scenario.
This DST experimental project is known as the “Heimdall Experiment” and its researchers are working alongside partners including The University of Adelaide, Deakin University, CISCO and Consilium Technology.
Lead DST Researcher for Heimdall, Dr Andrew Walters, said industry and academia play a vital role in Defence science and technology research.
“The Heimdall Experiment demonstrates how Defence prioritises teaming-up with important stakeholders to gain valuable information that can further protect and strengthen the security of Australia and its interests,” Dr Walters said.
“These collaborations also provide valuable insights and outcomes for other Australian agencies, further increasing the value for the Australian public.”
Using drones and high-tech equipment, DST and their industry and academia partners used the high-stress simulated emergency exercise to observe and gather crucial information as the scenario was very similar to the demands of life-threatening battlefield environments in Defence.
