Delivering more police to our frontline

Jacquie Petrusma,Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is the strongest supporter of Tasmania Police and has committed more than $348 million in the 2021-22 Budget as part of our plan to keep the community safe.

On top of the 258 police officers that the Government has previously committed, we are providing $9.4 million to commence recruiting an additional 50 police officers over the next five years.

This will take Tasmania Police to the highest establishment it has ever had – 1428 police officers, which is a 30 per cent increase since 2014, and will deliver on our plan to make Tasmania one of the safest places in which to live and raise a family.

70 new police officers have already graduated from the Police Academy this year.

These police officers have been posted to Hobart, Glenorchy, Bridgewater, Launceston, Devonport, Burnie and Kingston stations.

This includes the graduation of 17 police officers in June this year of the largest Accelerated Training Program that Tasmania Police has ever undertaken.

The experience that these police officers bring from other jurisdictions is already proving to be of great benefit and shows that Tasmania and Tasmania Police is a State and employer of choice attracting highly qualified police candidates from right around Australia to live and work in this State.

A course of 24 recruits commenced training on 9 August, who will be graduating in March next year, and a further course of 24 recruits is scheduled to commence training on 1 November 2021, graduating in June 2022.

Tasmania Police is also today launching a new Satellite Recruit Training Course that will be based in Launceston.

This innovative approach means that Tasmania Police recruits will be able to complete their training in the State’s north for the first time ever, with the first satellite recruitment course to kick off in Launceston in April next year.

This initiative gives people in the North and North West an opportunity to join Tasmania Police without having to move to Hobart to train at the Rokeby Police Academy away from their family, friends and their local communities.

This Satellite Course will allow recruits to remain living in northern Tasmania during their 31-week training and they will be stationed in their home districts when they graduate as constables.

Tasmanians are encouraged, wherever they live, to consider a rewarding and exciting career with Tasmania Police at: recruitment.police.tas.gov.au.
