Delivering nation-leading health approach to Tasmanians in remote areas

Guy Barnett, Minister for Health

The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering the healthcare services regional Tasmanians need with an innovative pilot program enabling pharmacists to prescribe medication to remote residents in areas where access to a general practitioner is limited.

This arrangement will occur in collaboration with a medical practitioner, who will make a diagnosis and delegate the function of prescribing medication to a pharmacist.

This Liberal Government is delivering another key recommendation from the independent Pharmacist Scope of Practice Review we commissioned, to provide a comprehensive assessment of the role of pharmacists in Tasmania.

Minister for Health, Guy Barnett, said this nation-leading initiative will improve access to healthcare for Tasmanians living in remote areas with limited access to a general practitioner.

“Our Government is investing in innovative healthcare models to ensure all Tasmanians, no matter where they live, receive the right health care for their needs,” Minister Barnett said.

“This initiative will make health care more accessible for Tasmanians living in rural and regional areas, reducing patient travel and wait times.

“Pharmacists are highly valued health professionals and by better utilising their skills and experience, we can significantly improve patient care across Tasmania.”

The pilot program will be introduced in coming months.
